Mequon, WI water hardness

Mequon water hardness: one published figure, and most homes outside it

The only hardness figure published for Mequon belongs to the Mequon Water Utility's purchased Lake Michigan water: roughly 137 milligrams per liter of hardness, which works out to about 8 grains per gallon. Most of the city pumps its own water from private wells, and those carry no published figure at all.

Two suppliers behind the utility's water

Two suppliers, Milwaukee Water Works and the North Shore Water Commission, sell the Mequon Water Utility treated Lake Michigan water, and the utility resells it without treating any of its own.

Both suppliers publish a hardness of roughly 137 milligrams per liter. That is what people mean when they say Mequon water is 8 grains, and it describes the utility's customers, not the city as a whole.

137 milligrams per liter, placed on the USGS scale

Put 137 on the USGS scale and it lands in the band called hard, which runs from 121 to 180. Below that band sit moderately hard, 61 to 120, and soft, 60 and under; above 180, near 10.5 grains, the label turns to very hard.

Divided by 17.1, the utility's 137 comes to about 8 grains per gallon: hard water, but nearer the bottom of its band than the top.

The homes the figure leaves out

Roughly eleven thousand people are on the utility system, in a city the state's 2026 estimate puts at 25,257. In September 2023, Urban Milwaukee reported that most Mequon residents still rely on wells of their own.

A private well draws Ozaukee County groundwater from carbonate rock, and no one publishes its hardness. The utility's 8 grains tells you nothing about it.

Finding the number for your house

If the Mequon Water Utility bills you, your figure is the one both suppliers publish, 137 milligrams per liter.

On a well, the number lives on that well's lab sheet. Some labs give milligrams per liter and some give grains; 17.1 milligrams per liter equal one grain. With no lab sheet, the first hardness number comes from the plumber, at your tap, before the softener is connected.

What the call does with the number

Utility customers start from the published figure, and the call says plainly that 8 grains is a modest number. Households on wells start from their lab sheet, or from the test on install day.

Either way, the softener takes its setting from your own tap's reading, and that tap is retested until it shows zero.
